Juchereau, Haiti

L'eglise Baptiste Jerusalem de Juchereau has about 500-600 members, but they can have as many as 950 on Communion Sunday, which is the first Sunday of every month. It was started 81 years ago by believers in the town of Trou du Nord and the existing building was built in 1985.

Pastor Samuel Mathieu is the Pastor in Juchereau and is their first full-time Pastor. The community of Juchereau is just a couple of kilometers outside the town of Trou du Nord, which is approximately 8 kilometers west of Terrier Rouge.

The community has a population of approximately 8,000 people, most of whom are subsistence farmers, and is located in a very rural area.

The school of L'eglise Baptiste Jerusalem de Juchereau has an enrollment of approximately 270 students in their preschool through level 4 classes. They currently do not receive regular food donations from the World Food Program so they are only able to feed the children 1 or 2 times per week.

The day these photos were taken, school had let out for the day so the children were not there. However, we were able to see this collage on the wall of the Principal's office, which contains photos of all the students.

Since the area is so rural, many of the children come from areas that are quite far from the main school building. Because of this, Pastor Samuel has established two "station" schools that are farther out into the rural countryside. These station schools are for the children who live too far to walk to the main building. This station, called the Bethany Station, has approximately 17 students. The other station has approximately 15 students.

In March of 2007, 60 children from the community of Juchereau were added to the Sponsorship Program of His Hands for Haiti.
