Our March trip to Haiti took place from March 9th to March 23rd, 2005. The team was made up of 3 men and 5 women, some "veterans" of past Haiti mission trips as well as 3 "first-timers".

Our team members were - (front row, l to r) Charlene Slaver, Lorraine Mitchell, Rosita Lewis, Bea Otte, (back row, l to r) Wes Hupper, John Turner, Philip Charles and Jamie Charles.

As usual, our primary work project was to interview, measure and photograph children for the Sponsorship Program. On this trip we updated the information on 110 children who are already in the program and then added 160 new children to the Sponsorship Program. (You can see photos of some of the 160 new children available to be sponsored on our

Child In Need page.)

The children really seemed to enjoy watching their friends being put through the "process" and our photographer (Bea) had quite an audience as she photographed them!

During our stay, the school began their Easter Break so the children were on vacation. When this happens, they do not receive the meal at school each day so our team gave money to Pastor Noel's wife, Marie, who used it to buy food to feed any children who showed up at the house.

We were able to feed the children for several days this way and we had anywhere from 40 to 70 children who were fed each day.

Before we went to Haiti, we were given the very generous donation of a cement block making machine which we took to Haiti and gave to the men who are making the cement blocks for the addition to the school building. The machine had to be disassembled in order to transport it to Haiti so first the men had to re-assemble it.

All went smoothly and the Haitians prefered the finished blocks made by the machine to the blocks they were able to make with their own hand-made forms.

The weather was wonderful on this trip so we were finally able to visit the village of Paulette (which you can see in photos on our Paulette page) as well as a few other villages. In the village of Phaeton we visited a church which was also started by Pastor Noel many years ago. Their pastor, Karry Lafosse, was not there that day but we did meet one of their deacons, Innocent Valcin.

We also saw their school building, but there were no students that day because of the Easter Break. For some reason, several mothers came running up to us to have us photograph their babies and we were more than happy to do just that!

In the villages of Grand Bassin and Caracol we saw 2 churches that are receiving financial assistance from churches in the US and it was very evident in their buildings. It doesn't take much financial assistance to make a big difference in what these Haitian churches are able to do not only in their construction but even more importantly in what they can do for the people of their church and their community.

We also met Pastor Samuel Mathieu (pictured with one of the young men of his church, Pierre Faniel) of Eglise Baptiste Jerusalem de Juchereau. Pastor Mathieu's church is one of many Haitian churches, like Phaeton and Paulette, which are not receiving any financial assistance from the US and we have promised them we would tell people here in the US about their churches and their situations to see if God would move anyone here in the US to partner with them. (If you or your church are interested in helping any of these churches, please contact us.)

As always, one of our favorite activities is just spending time with the people we have come to love in Terrier Rouge, including 102 year old Theocida Manigat and 7 month old Bethany Degrace, both of whom are doing just great. We will leave you with some more photos of our team members spending quality time with those they love in Terrier Rouge.
