Our October 2007 mission trip took place from October 22nd through November 3rd, 2007 - one day longer than we planned (more on that later...). This team of 12 was made up of members from Maine and California who performed a record-breaking work project!

Our team's three "newbies" - Karen, Steve and Mandy - as we prepare to leave Florida with MFI in the pre-dawn hours. As we were leaving the US, the San Diego wildfires were raging in California. The neighborhoods of Karen and Steve (our two Californians) had been evacuated and there was no word on the condition of their homes. We later learned that God was gracious to them and their homes were spared, although 3 homes in Karen's neighborhood were destroyed by fire.

As usual, our primary purpose on this trip was to add new children and to update many of the children in the Sponsorship Program. Because we had such a heavy work load planned for this trip, we divided the team into 2 "squads", each with its own interviewer, measurers and photographers. In this way we were able to interview, measure and photograph a record-breaking 671 children on this trip!

(right) Shayla and Mandy - measurers for Squad B. Note how Shayla is multi-tasking to save time - she is measuring this boy while he stands on the scale!

Don't let the apparent calm in these photos fool you! What you don't see are the lines of children, holding their interview forms, waiting to be measured.....

...or the crush of other children and even adults, curious to see what we are doing, like this photo taken in Ouvray showing Laura helping Jamie with interviews.

Most often, at the end of a morning's work, this is what the team would look like - exhausted!

While most of us were working with the children, two of our team members, Vince and Rock, were helping with a construction project at the Center of Protection. This year the 5 year old class had 90 students - way too many for one classroom. So Pastor Noel was adding another room onto the building so this huge class could be divided up into two classrooms.

You can see how necessary this new addition is when you look inside the existing 5 year old classroom! It will be great for them to be able to split up this huge class.

As was mentioned earlier, we had a huge work load on this trip. On the friday we were in Haiti, the two squads went to outlying schools in 2 different directions. Squad A went to Paulette and Phaeton while Squad B went to Danda.

(left) The team loaded up together in their usual mode of transportation.

Squad A had the larger job of seeing all the children in Paulette and Phaeton in one day so some changes were made to their squad. Instead of helping Tammy with measuring, Lorraine became the scribe for Jamie, as you can see in this photo of a child being interviewed in Paulette.

Without Lorraine to help Tammy with the measuring, some drastic measures had to be taken!

Our two carpenters, Rock and Vince, graciously offered to step way out of their comfort zones and join Squad A, helping to measure the children in Paulette and Phaeton.

Some of the most important things for any team member are a willing attitude and a servant's heart. Rock and Vince displayed these great qualities and we were very thankful to have them help out in this way, especially since we know that this job was something they thought they would never do....

...or that they would actually enjoy doing it! Kudos to both Rock and Vince!

While Squad A was busy seeing the 156 children in Paulette and Phaeton combined, Squad B was VERY busy seeing the children in Danda. No, don't adjust your computer monitor - this photo is not exactly in focus. But it is the only photo in existence of the chaotic scene in the room in Danda where Squad B was extremely busy seeing the 76 children in Danda. This was Matt's first time interviewing on his own and the team did a fantastic job working without more experienced help.

They were able to complete the job as well as allow some time for Mary and Laura to see some patients in Danda's clinic and for the other team members to visit with the children. Kudos to Squad B as well!

On Saturdays, Marie Noel runs a small feeding program to help feed the children who do not receive a meal on the days when school is not in session. She and her helpers prepare a meal for anywhere from 20 to 70 children, right in the courtyard behind the house. The team was on-hand to help with this job as well.

If you would like to help with the cost of preparing this meal each week, please contact us.

While we were in Haiti, Tropical Storm Noel decided to pay us a visit. We were very thankful that the part of Haiti we were in was not terribly affected by the storm.

Aside from some muddy roads, the biggest impact on us was the fact that Missionary Flights was unable to fly into Haiti to bring us out, causing us to stay in Haiti one day longer than we planned.

We made great use of this extra time! We spent some time with one of our friends in Cap-Haitien, Pastor Julio Jean-Gilles of Eglise Evangelique Bethesda de Madeline.

We also spent some time shopping at the Tourist Market in Cap-Haitien as well as doing some sightseeing while driving through the city!

And then there was some much-needed down time spent at Pastor Noel's home in the city.

But undoubtedly the best use of this time was when Matt went out to Children of the Promise to visit the child he and his wife, Carlyn, are in the process of adopting. We hope Reggie will be home with them in Maine soon!

All in all it was another great trip with a lot of work accomplished. We saw a record-breaking 671 children on this trip! We'll leave you here with some candid shots of the team enjoying time with some friends as well as some photos of our Haitian friends themselves.
