Terrier Rouge, Haiti Here is a look at the church and school of L'eglise Baptiste de Terrier Rouge, the principal town of the Child Sponsorship Program.
Pastor Apollon Noël is a Haitian national pastor who has been ministering as the founder and pastor of L'Eglise Baptiste of Terrier Rouge for over 50 years. He is pictured here with his wife, Marie and his youngest daughter, Clarah.
Pastor Marc Tyrell has been Pastor Noël's assistant for 5 years. He is pictured here with his wife, Florcie, and his two daughters, Lyse and Flordwing.
The church building has been under construction for several years and is now near completion.
The church ministers to approximately 600-700 people each Sunday, with up to 1000 people on Communion Sunday, which is the first Sunday of each month.
One way L'eglise Baptiste is working to help meet the needs in their community is through the ministry of their school. The school is divided into three separate entities - The Center of Protection The Center of Protection provides a half-day of education for children ages 3 through 5. These are the children of the 3 & 4-year-old classes of the Center of Protection with their teachers. These children all receive a half-day of education and a hot meal at the end of their school day.
L'ecole The second part of the school is just called L'ecole (which means "the school" in French). These are the children of the School - class levels 1 - 6, which is comparable to our Elementary School here in the States. The School students also receive a hot meal at the end of their school day.
The Secondary School The newest part of the school is the secondary school. This is comparable to our middle and high schools. Many of the children in the secondary school are older than the typical middle or high school age student in the United States, but they still desire to finish their education. The total average enrollment for all 3 parts of the Baptist School in Terrier Rouge is approximately 1,000 students. This is the building used by both the "l'ecole" students and the Secondary students. The building is not large enough for both the School students and the Secondary students to use at the same time so the School students attend from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the Secondary students attend from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is a problem with this schedule, though. Haiti is in the tropics and because of this, it gets dark between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. year-round. The don't have lights inside the classrooms because there is no electricity in this part of the country so it gets very dark inside the classrooms before the end of the school day for the secondary students. There are plans to add a second floor to this building so both the School students and the Secondary students can attend school in the morning. Construction of new first-floor rooms began in December of 2006. One of these rooms will be an office for the school principal and another will be used as a library.
